As a paint/material prepper, you'll be responsible for preparing various surfaces for paint, including sanding, masking, and bead blasting. It's work, but it's satisfying work in a clean, air-conditioned environment. And the paint department is growing as we add new products, so this is essentially an entry-level position that will allow a person with a can-do attitude and good work ethic to learn and grow into a full-fledged paint technician.
We build composite rotor blades here, and most are white with black or red stripes. Nothing too exciting, but the work is important and must be exacting. As a paint prepper, we'd like you to be familiar with standard painting concepts and procedures, but we can also teach these concepts. More important is your work ethic and willingness to learn and work with the team.
A bit of familiarity with hand and power tools helps too. If there’s not enough work in the paint department, you may be called upon to help in shipping/receiving building 20-foot long shipping crates for our main rotor blades. Or you may help in the completions department installing bushing or bonding grip plates. Every day is a little different.
From our lead painter: I've never worked at a place like this. Here at Van Horn Aviation, we're well-equipped with the best equipment to spray with. It's a good, clean work environment and we all feel like family. They trust us to do our job with minimal supervision. If you're looking for a place to use all of your potential, come work here.
Duties and Responsibilities
Scrape, sandpaper, prime, or seal surfaces prior to painting.
Cover work surfaces with cloth or plastic to ensure protection.
Tape and mask off panels or other areas when needed.
Clean up all equipment, including brushes and spray guns.
Follow steps in work orders and relevant engineering documents.
Qualifications
Highly motivated individual with effective team-oriented interpersonal skills including the willingness to work where needed to achieve team goals.
Ability to read and interpret technical publications, work orders, engineering documents and drawings is a plus.
Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
Must be detail-oriented.
Must have the ability to take direction well.
General knowledge of practices and procedures used to prepare composite and metal structures for primer and paint is a plus.
Ability to work with basic shop tools and equipment used in preparation for and application of paint.
Ability to use woodworking tools such as power saws is a plus.
Ability to use precision instruments such as calipers, scales and other measuring devices.
Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds.
Must read, write and speak English.
Must be able to work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday 8 AM – 5 PM.
Must have a clean criminal record and two forms of ID showing eligibility to work in the United States.
